1. Cleaning: The Essential First Step
Before conditioning or polishing, always clean your shoes to remove surface dirt and prevent it from getting trapped in the leather.
- Remove Laces: Take out the shoelaces to ensure you can clean the entire shoe, including the tongue.
- Brush Away Debris: Use a horsehair brush to gently wipe away any loose dirt, dust, and grime. A soft-bristled brush is essential to avoid scratching the leather.
- Wipe Down with a Damp Cloth: For more stubborn dirt, lightly dampen a soft cloth with water and a small amount of mild soap. Gently wipe the surface of the shoes. Avoid oversaturating the leather.
- Let Them Dry Naturally: Allow your shoes to air dry completely at room temperature. Never place them near a direct heat source like a radiator or fireplace, as this can cause the leather to crack and become brittle.
